Google, FireFox and the World!
Google AdSense is now trying to push their new promotion, to get
users to install the FireFox web browser that comes packaged
with inbuilt Google Search.
This is a sign of the ongoing business war between Microsoft and
the other big internet players, in this case Google. It is a
fight that will rage on and on because the prize is enormous.
Microsoft don't really want to just sell us operating systems,
they want us to become involved with the whole computer and
internet experience. They want us to use their search engines
carrying their adverts that generate them revenue. Google does
not want this to happen, Google want us to use their search
engine with their adverts.
The problem for Google is that Microsoft sells more than the
Lion's share of operating systems used on computers round the
world. Microsoft also include in their operating systems their
own browser, Internet Explorer. This is still by far the most
popular browser, my hit records reflect this. And if Microsoft
so choose, they could make it such that if you want to use a
search engine, you would have to use MSN search. If Microsoft
wanted to, they could make it such that you have to use their
browser, their search engine and only view sites they let you
view.
What!! I hear the self proclaimed keepers of internet freedom
cry. This is not fair, Microsoft could take over the whole of
the internet! Then these keepers of internet freedom will have
us all install open-source operating systems such as Linux and
use browsers such as FireFox, the same browser Google wants us
all to use on our Microsoft computers.
I have tried with Linux, I really have. But it is not ready for
the everyday user. I gave up when trying to install a network
card and realised I would need to recompile the kernel. Windows
just asked for a driver then worked fine. I am considered a
geek, but my life is too short to work out such tiny
idiosyncrasies. Windows is here to stay, at least until the
open-source people make their systems user friendly.
But will Microsoft take over the internet? They are cash-driven,
certainly. I do believe they will subtly try to worm their way
into making us use more and more of their products, but to
cart-blanche take over our surfing experience and freedom would
cause such a backlash that people would leave in droves.
Microsoft are far from angels and they have to give users what
they want to survive.
So, Google are supporting the great anti-Microsoft camp by
supporting FireFox. Oh yes, Google are going to be the hero of
the internet freedom fighters. Yeah right! Google are trying to
push Microsoft into the background of the browser stakes to
ensure we don't all get coerced into using Microsoft search
engines and Microsoft home pages. And it conveniently happens
that the particular flavour of FireFox that Google is pushing
comes preinstalled with Google search facilities. They are
equally as guilty as Microsoft in trying to take over our whole
internet experience.
Everybody hates Microsoft because they are successful. In the UK
everyone hates Tesco for the same reasons. If Google push too
hard with their flavour of FireFox they may suffer the same fate
as well. Google are already seen as another big corporate
behemoth that could possibly run wild and take over the
internet. The way I see it is this. Whoever gives the end user,
the customer, what they actually want, will win. And these
customers are not stupid. We can be lead in a direction with
quality products and services, but we will not be pushed.
I look forward to the future, this battle will be interesting to
watch.
